Transitions are happening all over the Diffee house these days. Tax Season is almost over, summer is just around the corner, I will not be working much longer, and baby Cohen will be here very soon!
Due to Cohen's upcoming arrival we need Peyton to surrender the crib and embrace his new little toddler bed. I thought that would not be such a hard thing. He loves nap time, so I decided that today was the day to introduce the Big Boy Bed to Peyton. I knew it would take a little work so I decided that if he was fighting this, I would only be persistent for one hour. I was convinced that he would be pleasantly snoozing away in the new bed and I would be battling my big pile of laundry by 10:30 am!
Ha! I am so naive some times. At first he laid right down, waved night night to me, I kissed his sleepy little blushed cheek, and I was blissfully off to the laundry. Wow ... that was easy!

Oh yeah ... I forgot Peyton could open doors! We played this game about ten times before I came up with a new plan.

Plan B was more ambush style. I stood by the door with it slightly cracked open so I could see him. And when he started to get out of bed I popped in and caught him in the act. The first time I did this I must have scared the crap out of him ... he took a face dive forward!
(and me being the wonderful mother I am took a picture rather than grabbing) Oops =)

So plan B was not working out so well. Peyton loves to be startled so this was an even MORE fun game to him. He would scream and smile every time I came through the door.

Plan C ... I would sit right next to him until he fell asleep. I brought in a book to read to him "Three Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" which he loved. Unfortunately we taught him the meaning of the word "jump" so that was what he wanted to do next. Erg! How am I doing this SO wrong?! He was so ready for his nap 45 minutes ago.

Plan D does not come with pictures. I decided to stand outside his room and hold the door shut. I heard the pitter patter of his feet RUNNING for the door ... and I loud scream when he could not open it. He was persistent for a minute. Then there were tears ... fingers under the door ... and a pitiful little cry of "ma-ma".
Once I hit the one hour mark of trying this I decided to put him in the crib where he fell fast asleep in seconds. I gave in. And at that point I was too exhausted for laundry, so I decided to blog the adventure instead =)
HELP! Any suggestion for what I am doing so wrong? Is this supposed to be a process or should it work the first time? Are you supposed to fight back longer or ease them into this? Help help help =(

That's so funny! I would have tried to get the picture to.
I have no helpful suggestions, but I'm sure that it's more of a process than an instant thing. I hope he does better for you tomorrow!
This is only a theory but in my opinion it is waaay harder to switch from a crib to a toddler bed than a crib to a real sized bed. With my first, she went straight to a twin. It was against the wall with a long railing on the other side so she wouldn't fall out. I think this felt a lot like a crib and was a lot more work to get out of. With my second I was so excited to be given a toddler bed. It ended up being a nightmare. She'd just roll right on out of bed every time I closed the door. We trained her Super Nanny style and within a few nights she completely stayed in bed but, boy, those were a long long couple of nights.
Aww... he's so cute. I know it's really tough, especially with a new baby on the way... but honestly he might not be ready for a big boy bed yet. It might be worthwhile to get another crib. When we had Juliet I had to get another crib for Logan to sleep in too. They were both in cribs together for months... and when he finally did get into his big boy bed the first thing he did was fall off and break his clavicle. UGH. I think he was about 2 before he was in a real bed. Juliet was in her crib forever too. She could get out of it though, so it wasn't much help. hehe. Adorable pictures though!!!
such an adorable post of your little boys' antics. he is so darn cute! I have no real advice...we tried with ollie but gave up because HE JUST PLAIN FLAT OUT DID NOT GET IT. We will wait til he is two. My new baby can sleep in the bassinett for a few weeks and then transition to a pack&play if need be...though that is where ollie currently sleeps because he can climb right out of the crib and that is too dangerous.
if you decide to stick the toddler bed out, you may need to sacrifice quite a few days and nights of sleep. it requires a lot of faithful persistence!
